Google Maps to GPX — FAQ

Short, direct answers about converting a Google Maps directions link into a GPX file, plus the pricing and format questions people ask most.

Converting a route

How do I convert Google Maps directions to a GPX file?

Plan a route in Google Maps, copy the directions URL, paste it into GMaps To GPX, sign in with Google, choose track or waypoint format, then download the GPX. Open the file in any app that imports GPX (Garmin workflows, OruxMaps, Xcode, and more).

Why do I need to sign in to convert?

Signing in with Google lets us fetch the full route from Google Maps on your behalf — without it we cannot access the detailed waypoint data. Sign-in also tracks your credit balance so each successful conversion deducts one credit. Your route data can be deleted from your account after you download the GPX file.

Do you support short URLs like maps.app.goo.gl?

Yes. We accept both full Google Maps URLs and short links (e.g. maps.app.goo.gl), as long as the link points to a directions route. The URL must contain /dir/ in the path after expansion.

Do multi-stop routes work?

Yes. Paste a directions link that includes multiple stops. After sign-in we fetch the full route geometry, including intermediate waypoints, and write it into the GPX file.

Do transit (train/bus) directions work everywhere?

Transit support depends on Google Maps transit coverage for that region. If Google cannot return a transit route for your link, conversion will fail for that mode — try walking, cycling, or driving instead, or check Google's transit availability for the country.

GPX files and formats

What is GPX?

GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is an open XML format for storing routes, tracks, and waypoints. Most GPS devices, fitness apps (Garmin, Strava), and map apps (OruxMaps, Locus) can import and export GPX files. It is the most widely supported GPS file format.

What is the difference between track and route mode?

Track mode writes a dense path along the road geometry from Google Directions — what most GPS apps and planning tools need to show a line on the roadway. Route mode writes only key turn points for a smaller file; many planners connect those points with straight lines. Long Track files can be large — use the free GPX Simplify tool under Format tools to compress them without uploading.

How do I use the GPX file on Android?

Download the GPX file to your Android device, then open it in OruxMaps, Locus Map, or a similar GPS navigation app using the app's "Import" function. Use our for a flow pre-set to track format.

Can I convert Google My Maps (KML) instead of a directions URL?

This converter needs a Google Maps directions URL (a link with /dir/). For My Maps or Google Earth layers, export KML/KMZ from My Maps, then use our free KML to GPX or KMZ to GPX tools under Format tools — those run in your browser with no upload.

Credits and pricing

Is the converter free?

New accounts receive a small number of free credits to try the converter — no credit card required to sign up. Each conversion uses one credit. When you run out, you can purchase more from the . Credits never expire. The format conversion tools under and the GPX viewer are completely free with no credits needed.

Do credits expire?

What formats can I get?

The converter outputs GPX (GPS Exchange Format), which is compatible with Garmin, OruxMaps, Locus Map, Strava, and most GPS apps. You can then use the free format tools to convert GPX to KML, TCX, or FIT.

Do you offer enterprise or volume pricing?
